One screen, one color: how hand-screen printing actually builds a pattern

Why a six-color hand-screened wallcovering means six separate screens and six passes down the table, and what that shows up as on the finished roll.

Hand-screen printing looks simple from across the room and stops looking simple the moment you watch it done. The paper is laid flat along a long padded table, sometimes sixty or more feet of it, and the color goes down one screen at a time. Each screen is a fine mesh stretched on a frame, blocked everywhere the color should not print and open where it should. The printer lowers the screen, pulls a rubber-edged squeegee across it, and ink pushes through the open mesh onto the paper. Then the screen lifts, the printer steps down the table, and the same stroke repeats.

The rule that governs everything is one screen per color. A pattern with a cream ground, a sage leaf, a darker sage vein, and a touch of gilt is a four-color job, which means four screens, four squeegee pulls over every repeat, and four trips down the table with drying time between them. Add a color and you add a full pass. This is why hand-screened goods are quoted by the number of colors in the design, not just by the yardage, and why deep, many-color patterns cost what they cost.

Registration is the craft. Each screen has to drop in exactly where the last one left off so the vein lands inside the leaf and the gilt sits on its outline. Printers align by hand against marks and by eye, repeat after repeat, and a fraction of an inch of drift is visible as a soft double edge. A little of that variation is the signature of the method rather than a fault. On a machine-printed vinyl every repeat is mechanically identical; on a hand-screened paper the colors sit a hair differently across a run, and that is the tell that a person made it.

It shows up in the finished roll in ways worth knowing before you hang it. Color is mixed in batches, so two rolls from different runs can read slightly apart, which is why hand-screened orders should come from a single dye lot and be checked against each other in daylight before install. The ink sits on the surface rather than soaking in, giving a faint relief you can feel. And because the pattern is stepped down a table by hand, the repeat is honest to that process, not to a printing cylinder's fixed circumference.

None of this is a drawback to design around. It is the reason the surface has depth a printed sheet does not. Knowing how the color got there tells you what to order, how to inspect it, and what the small differences from panel to panel actually are.
